OK as most of you are aware, i tile swimming pools, we like to do our own sand/cement substrate
IYO should we use a primer before we apply tile adhesive/mosaic or is to not necessary ??
just for the record we never do use primer!
BUT WHY ? what is advantage/or disadvantage please ?
  2. jay Professional Tile Fixer

I’d say not, I usually use X77W, back skim render as I go first then spread as usual. I reckon you get a better bond without. Same with mosaic fix.

Surely the only reason you'd prime a like-for-like substrate is to A) reduce sucking-in or B) seal a very dusty surface???
  7. Joe @ Hillhead Tiling Professional Tile Fixer

Any dusty surfaces IMO should be brushed down etc thoroughly and primed with a suitable primer for that surface.
I always prime walls and floors but lately i'v seen a pre primed floor peel
I use Bal APD or Mapei primerG usually.
I have seen tiling failures from guys using no primer so my mind is clear.

Do you use any tanking on the face of your render Dave ?
What tanking is used in pools?
  9. ray Professional Tile Fixer

why on earth would anybody use primer on sand cemnet render  disadvantage you lose 60 to 70% of your key no primer 100% key use cement based adhesive perfect key and water proof after drying:)
  10. Joe @ Hillhead Tiling Professional Tile Fixer

How can you lose 60 - 70 % with an impregnating primer?
And why do the manufacturers recommend their use?
    I could be wrong here.

I use a primer if I think it will consolidate the dust, but don't usually bother otherwise Dave

Yes penetrating primer is the key here.

manfactor make money out of primer.when most adhesive could be maid to stick to any surface .once you prime sand and cemment you have resticked the pull of the adhesive.on open screed adhesive sticks like sh to a blacket and combines as one. the only draw back. you have to be fast and precise.not let adhesive skin

Sorry old school here always prime with sbr use it in floor screeds (slurry coat)also in the dash coat before render walls stops the adh from skiming to quick also gives a better bond

I was taught that, unless you have a good reason for priming, then don't prime just for the sake of it, as you are adding two potential failure points.
    between primer and the substrate.
and between the primer and adhesive.

The guy that taught me never primed anything and had roughly 30m2 down or up by lunchtime every day.
He had some failures i know but on skimmed surfaces only.
