Hi all, just moved over here after being told about by Gisela.
I'm a mosaicist, based in East Anglia who specialises in reproducing Greek and Roman floor mosaics. I cut all my own stone and I'm always interested to read about the technical side on using stone for tiling :)

Haha, Ray, no, not competition, Lawrence's and my style are too different, but we go wayyy back and are mutually supportive. I couldn't do what he does, and I expect Lawrence feels that way the other way round. AND we're of the same backpacker mind :)

Thanks everyone for the welcome! It's good to be able to get advice from technical professionals as my interest is in doing floors and I find (and I'm sure Gisela will back me up on this) that so many mosaic artists seem to get their technical infomation from.........other mosaic artists o_O. When it comes to things such as substrate, adhesives, sealants etc I really feel that i'd rather talk to people who lay entire floors every day and not those who have done it 'a few times'!
I'm sure I'm generalising a bit but I recently went into the library and picked out a random 4 mosaic books written by professional mosaic artists and 3 of them recommended using ('water resistant') PVA for outside installations

We all continue to learn Lawrence, right or wrong ways can go right or wrong at times.
I still rip off tiles that have been dot and dabbed, have they failed in 20 odd years- no.
Materials and installation techniques evolve, places like this help us to do same.
