Would be better to find out what type of flooring it is first

Branty It's been there for around 50-60 years and doesn't have any problems I could see or been told of by the home owners. Talked to the customer and they called it a bitumen floor but would that be another thing altogether wouldn't it?

Bitumen and asphalt are often synonymous. Bitumen is the binder used in asphalt compounds. The other thingi thought of was magnesite but that is usually coloured green or pinkish.

I'd be confident that it's flooring grade asphalt, which as I understand it has a low bitumen content. Lots of houses built arround that time have it, mine does (tiles stuck down with BAL 7 years ago and still there), give BAL techinical a call in the morning, they'll know what questions to ask to maek sure its flooring grade.

I'm going to be there tomorrow to level the other floors in the house going to see if I can chip abit up to bring home and get a definate answer to what it is!

Branty will do! Must admit I've tiled to this type of floor years back when I first started not realising that you could get different screeds! My brothers floor and it's still there no problems! Cheers for the info much appreciated.

I can confirm Fibrebase sticks like glue to asphalt.
The best smoothing compound I've ever used.

to me it looks just like a normal screed that has had some marly tile down with a asphalt addy, have you tried to scrape it ??

Jay it was flooring grade asphalt confirmed by the customer also. After having talked the ears off ultra's tech and lab dept have levelled the floors throughout and tiling them in 400 x 600 green slate.

    What products did they recommend?
  16. T'T Professional Tile Fixer

At first to get to the depth I needed in some places they recommended level it two with granite chippings but couldn't get any so they said as it was a small area that im levelling the dips up I could use level it one but not over the entire floor. Next day skimmed the rest of the floor with level it two. Using their RS to tile with. Did try to get hold of bals fibre base but no one does it around here. Why doesn't Topps stock any of bals levellers?
  17. branty1uk Tiling Forum Moderator

Not sure. Are you close to any ctd stores?
  18. T'T Professional Tile Fixer

No but im working in Exeter at the mo and the ctd don't stock it there either as I had called them! Must admit we don't have any of the big tile chain shops in the town I live in or the next one! Think nearest is Topps at over 30 miles
    away!
